In Sir Gawain and the Green Knight the lord in Fitt 3 of the poem goes out hunting while his wife stays in the castle to seduce Gawain. Hunting played a major part in the lives of the aristocracy in the Middle Ages; in this print we see a hunter at rest with his dogs in the snowy landscape, thinking about enjoying a warm meal at the end of the day. The landscape is inspired by a wall painting at Cottered church in Hertfordshire.
