This original linocut print features Sir Gawain, travelling through the snow to meet his nemesis in Fitt 4 of the Middle English alliterative masterpiece Sir Gawain and the Green Knight.

 

In the words of the poem,

 

But wild winter storms out there were awake;

Clouds cast the cold keenly to the earth,

With nigh enough of the north to tan naked skin.

The stinging snow showers snapped at the wildlife;

The whistling winds whipped from the heights,

And drove each dale full of great deep drifts...

 

The print is hand printed on 250 gsm Somerset Velvet Paper on a 19th Century Albion Press in 3 colours, printed from 3 different plates and signed and edition by the artist. Printed area: 12" x 12"; paper size approx twice as much again.
