Michael Smith's translation of the medieval epic The Romance of William and the Werewolf is the first published in Modern English.

It tells the story of two princes who are wrongly stripped of their inheritance. One (William) is, as a small boy, the subject of a murder plot by his uncle; the other (Alphonse), is changed into a werewolf by his stepmother.

The narrative is a spectacular story of exile and return, love and loyalty, and the rule of law over greed and avarice.

But don't be swayed into thinking this is mere gentle folklore - behind its beautiful narrative lies a powerful message that political leadership depends for its success on generosity, truth and social justice. Its message for modern politicians could not be more stark!

Featuring a complete translation of the romance (including filling missing lacunae by incorporating translations from Middle English text's the Old French source), the book is beautifully illustrated throughout and contains detailed appendices and copious notes to provide the reader with a full understanding of this magnificent romance.
