This original linocut print, derived from a medieval manuscript, features Sir Perceval seeking advice from his aunt, who is depicted as a recluse.
Recluses are often seen at critical points in romances whereby, as well as holding the key to how a leading character gains further knowledge, they also act as signals to the audience in terms of the structure and direction of the narrative.
Often the advice given helps the knight to gain a deeper understanding of God, as well as appreciating the gifts grants to the knight. In this instance, Perceval seeks advice from his aunt prior to his own trial on a remote island.
This print, Sir Perceval and his Aunt, has been designed, cut, and printed by hand by Michael Smith. It is made from four different blocks, with additional colours created as each overlays others in the composition.
Printmaker Michael Smith has an established reputation for the evocation and creation of medieval romances through printmaking, performance and translation. He has translated and illustrated a number of medieval romances including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and William of Palerne.
The print is hand printed on fabric-based 250 gsm Somerset Velvet on a 19th Century Albion Press in 4 colours, printed from 4 different plates and signed and edition by the artist. Printed area: 12" x 9"; paper size approx twice as much again.
