This original linocut print in features Sir Gawain, the central character of the Middle English alliterative masterpiece Sir Gawain and the Green Knight as returns to Camelot after his encounter with the Green Knight.
In the story, after being humiliated by the Green Knight at the Green Chapel, Gawain returns home, rueful as a result of his encounter. Luckily for him, King Arthur greets him with joy and insists all the Round Table must wear a green band in memory of Gawain's adventure.
This print, The Journey of Sir Gawain, has been designed, cut, and printed by hand by Michael Smith. It is made from four different blocks, with additional colours created as each overlays others in the composition.
Printmaker Michael Smith has an established reputation for the evocation and creation of medieval romances through printmaking, performance and translation. He has translated and illustrated a number of medieval romances including Sir Gawain and the Green Knight and William of Palerne.
The print is hand printed on fabric-based 250 gsm Somerset Velvet on a 19th Century Albion Press in 4 colours, printed from 4 different plates and signed and edition by the artist. Printed area: 12" x 12"; paper size approx twice as much again.
